On Being a Writer . . .

Ever feel this way?

A person who publishes a book willfully appears before the populace with his pants down . . . If it is a good book nothing can hurt him. If it is a bad book, nothing can help him.

- Edna St. Vincent Millay

Hmmm . . . I wonder where I stand?

Well...if your pants are down, hopefully with your back to us:)

Sorry, couldn't help myself.

Great quote, and yes, I think I know that feeling. There's a line in a U2 song that refers to "a soul in its strip-tease." That's sort of what writing is like. We strip down, letting our soul be bared on paper, and when people see us naked, they'll either decide it's something worthy of sculpting or painting...or they'll toss us a robe and ask us to please put it on because they don't want to see any more (how humiating.)

Yes: exposed.

How can a writer please all? No one can. Where you must stand exposed is writing from that place of truth, that place where your heart pours out in whatever form because it can no longer contain the words.

Dude, visit my blog. I'm doing one of these goofy blog "tag" things and have tagged you (sorry.) Ignore me if you want to! :)
